Depends on your birth day and your cartoon literacy. If your under 30 (40?) and you spent your childhood watching the Smurfs and Scooby Doo, then consider yourself a cartoon illiterate. Don't blame yourself, blame TV and inadequate child rearing. If your 30 to 40 you may have been lucky enough to have had a Looney Tunes channel that showed endless reruns of Bugs Bunny, Syvester the Cat, Tweety Bird and Porky Pig. Today's kids are raised on Spongebob Squarepants, which passes as a classic cartoon.
For those of us a bit over 40, it is our job to educate and pass on our cultural cartoon heritage. Books have been written about this stuff, but a good place to start is with a Roger Rabbit. There's a vast cast of characters from cartoon history appearing either with bit parts or cameos and at least one joke every 10 seconds, usually more. Fact is, I hadn't seen it in about 10 years and it's funnier now than it was then.
Part of the burden of our generation is to pass on this knowledge to those who come after us. For your edification, here's the opening sequence along with whatever other clips have slipped past the copyright police.
